Mambourg Grand Cru: a sun-drenched terroir above Sigolsheim
A particularly well-exposed terroir
Mambourg stretches across the hills above Sigolsheim, at the entrance to the Kaysersberg Valley. Its south-facing exposure allows it to benefit from abundant sunshine and conditions conducive to the even ripening of the grapes.
The marl-limestone subsoil also contributes to the terroir’s character. The combination of the hillside’s warmth, its exposure, and the nature of the soils fosters rich wines, while providing them with the freshness necessary for their balance.
Rich and aromatic wines
The Mambourg Grand Cru is home to four grape varieties: Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, and Muscat.
Wines from this terroir are generally full-bodied, generous, and expressive. They develop intense aromas of ripe fruit, flowers, and spices, with a lovely, lingering finish.
Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris, in particular, find conditions in Mambourg that are ideal for expressing their aromatic richness. Depending on the grape variety, the vintage, and the winemaker’s expertise, these wines can also reveal beautiful complexity after a few years of aging.
A Grand Cru dating back several centuries
Mambourg has a long-standing reputation for winemaking. As early as the 8th century, written records refer to wines produced on the hillsides of Sigolsheim. By the 10th century, several abbeys already owned vineyards in this area.
Today, Mambourg is one of the seven Grand Crus of Alsace located in the Kaysersberg Valley, alongside Schlossberg, Furstentum, and Wineck-Schlossberg, among others.
Look up
As you stroll through the Sigolsheim vineyard, you can’t miss the large letters “Grand Cru Mambourg” standing out in the heart of the vines.
But have you noticed the little nod to the winemakers?
The letters “M” and “B” appear in a different color. When you look at them separately, they spell out the word “AMOUR.”
It’s a hidden message—a declaration of love for Mambourg—conceived by those who work this land and know it through the changing seasons. So, on your next stroll through the vineyards, look up and try to decipher the message!
